UPDATE - follow-up to The Nobel for IceCube and the search for neutrinos from outer space | Explained: Belgian-born U.S. physicist Francis Halzen has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in physics for helping build the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica.

Background

IceCube is a telescope buried deep in the Antarctic ice that lacks mirrors or lenses and does not point at the stars. Instead, it relies on 5,160 optical sensors placed on 86 cables between 1.4 km and 2.4 km under the ice to catch tiny flashes of light called Cherenkov radiation.

Context

Neutrinos are subatomic particles with no electric charge that travel in straight lines through space and interact very rarely with matter. Studying them helps scientists understand powerful cosmic events like exploding stars and distant galaxies that accelerate particles to extreme energies.
