Tata Punch CNG AMT Real-World Fuel Economy Tested

The 2026 Tata Punch facelift brings two new engine choices, including an automated manual transmission option for its CNG variant. This makes it one of the few cars in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG kit paired with an automatic gearbox. The Tata iCNG lineup now covers all variants, with prices ranging from Rs 6.85 lakh to Rs 10.77 lakh ex-showroom.

Powertrain and Performance

The Punch iCNG uses a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine connected to a 5-speed automated manual transmission. In CNG mode, it makes 73.4 horsepower and 103 Nm of torque. In petrol mode, it makes 87.8 horsepower and 115 Nm of torque. The car also gets twin CNG tanks placed beneath the boot floor, but it misses out on drive modes and an automatic stop-start feature.

Efficiency Test Results

During testing conducted entirely in CNG mode, the vehicle delivered 18.87 km per kg in the city and 25.36 km per kg on the highway. Refilling the empty 60-litre CNG tank took 7.9 kg of gas, though this amount can change based on pump pressure and outside temperature. With an overall average efficiency of 22.12 km per kg, drivers can expect a range of 175 to 185 km on a full tank. In earlier tests, the manual transmission version was more efficient by 1.83 km per kg in the city and 5.64 km per kg on the highway compared to this 5-speed AMT version.
