Antonelli Wins Spanish Grand Prix After Safety Car Boost

Kimi Antonelli took his eighth victory of the season by winning the first-ever Spanish Grand Prix held at Madring. The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line 4.351 seconds ahead of second-placed Max Verstappen. McLaren driver Lando Norris started on pole and initially held the lead after Antonelli cut two corners at the start. Norris built a comfortable gap out front, but the race changed on Lap 15 when a Virtual Safety Car was called out just as Norris had passed the pit lane entrance. Antonelli and Verstappen took advantage of the timing to pit for fresh tyres. Norris had to complete an extra lap before pitting, and a slow pit stop dropped him down to fifth place. Antonelli inherited the lead later on when Charles Leclerc made his pit stop on Lap 48. Verstappen and Norris closed in behind Antonelli with Overtake Mode, but Madring proved difficult for passing. Norris ultimately finished in third place to complete the podium. After the race, Antonelli admitted it was a tough race and stated that he felt Norris deserved to win. Charles Leclerc finished fourth ahead of George Russell in fifth. Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton started strongly but had to retire early due to braking issues. Liam Lawson took sixth for Red Bull, Franco Colapinto seventh for Alpine, and Oscar Piastri eighth for McLaren. Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top ten for Racing Bulls and Audi respectively. In the championship standings, Antonelli has extended his lead to 81 points over teammate Russell. Hamilton remains third overall despite his retirement, sitting 20 points behind Russell, while Norris is now just five points behind Hamilton. Formula 1 heads next to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from September 24 to 26.
