HBO has greenlit a five-episode revival of the comedy series "Girls," with production set to start in 2027. The original show ran on the network from 2012 to 2017 and followed a group of friends navigating their twenties in New York City. All four primary cast members are returning for the new episodes. Lena Dunham reprises her role as Hannah Horvath, Alison Williams returns as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke plays Jessa Johansson, and Zosia Mamet comes back as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells also returns to play Elijah Krantz.
Behind the Scenes
Lena Dunham is back as creator, showrunner, and star. Judd Apatow returns as executive producer for Apatow Productions, working alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress, and Michael P. Cohen from Dunham's Good Thing Going banner. Williams, Kirke, Mamet, and Rannells also take on co-executive producer roles. Notably absent from the revival lineup are Adam Driver and co-showrunner Jenni Konner. Dunham detailed difficult experiences involving both individuals in her recent memoir, "Famesick."
Context
Revivals of popular television shows from the 2000s and 2010s have become common as networks tap into nostalgia and existing fanbases. "Girls" earned 19 Emmy nominations during its original run and remains a distinct cultural touchstone for its unglamorous portrayal of young adulthood.
