Black Bear Picks Up Comedy Script About Mother and Daughter Dating the Same Man

Studio Black Bear bought the rights to a new comedy script written by the duo Cassiy Alla and Read Masino. The untitled movie follows a mother and daughter who accidentally start dating the same man at the same time. The logline states that the whole family must deal with the chaotic fallout while each member faces their own turning point in life and romance.

Background

Alla and Masino met while working as assistants at Apatow Productions and are now working toward their feature film breakouts. They also have another movie in development at Netflix that will be directed by Nahnatchka Khan and produced by Berlanti and Schechter. Both writers have extensive background experience working on various television shows and for prominent creators.

Reaction

Michael Heimler, who serves as President of Production and Operations at Black Bear, praised the project as one of the funniest and most poignant scripts about romance and family dysfunction the company has seen in years. In a joint statement, Alla and Masino expressed their excitement about the partnership, describing their work as a chaotic comedy about a family rather than a sweet family comedy.

Context

Black Bear launched its own distribution arm in 2025 and has backed several notable films including 'Sing Sing' and 'The Imitation Game'. Production companies frequently buy spec scripts—which are scripts written independently without a prior commission—to develop them into future feature films. The studio's upcoming slate features high-profile projects starring actors like Rebecca Ferguson, Olivia Colman, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
