U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is heading to India next week to boost energy ties between the two nations, according to the U.S. State Department. His trip runs from October 17 to 22 and follows an earlier stop in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Itinerary And Stops

Before reaching India, Mr. Rubio will attend the C5+1 Ministerial meeting in Samarkand and hold talks with leaders from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic. A business delegation of over 200 members will accompany him to Central Asia. He will then land in Mumbai and Jamnagar during his Indian leg.

Meetings And Goals

During his stay in India, the American diplomat will hold discussions with senior government figures to review the strategic partnership and talk about global and regional events. He also plans to sit down with corporate leaders to boost business investments. His upcoming stop in Jamnagar holds special importance because the city hosts the massive Reliance refinery, which can process 1.4 million barrels of crude oil daily and stands as the biggest single-site facility of its kind globally.

Context

Energy trade and strategic partnerships are major pillars of modern relations between Washington and New Delhi. High-profile diplomatic visits like this one typically aim to iron out policy hurdles and open doors for large private investments between the two economies.
