The Video Release

Investigative podcast host Pablo Torre has obtained and published security camera footage capturing singer Kelly Clarkson's brief visit to Art of Play, a novelty store located in Brooklyn, New York.

The Dispute

Clarkson visited the specialty shop on Saturday alongside her children while dressed casually in a baseball cap, bright yellow T-shirt, baggy jeans, and a backpack. The video shows her walking through the crowded store and eventually standing near a wall-mounted bird automaton named Molly. She interacts with a store employee who points toward the display, though audio from the footage is absent. Clarkson later leaves the items she was holding, speaks animatedly to a staff member at the counter, and exits after spending less than five minutes inside. The public disagreement began when Clarkson posted on social media that she was treated poorly by staff who allegedly looked at her as though she could not afford a $15,000 item. She wrote that an employee spoke to her in a condescending manner and offered to find her something else to buy instead. Art of Play responded on social media by stating that the bird is a permanent fixture used in their live magic shows and is not for sale. Clarkson disputed this response online, maintaining that a price tag hung nearby and that the employee explicitly told her it cost $15,000.

Store Impact

Store owner Adam Rubin stated in an interview with Inside Edition that the shop has faced intense online review-bombing following the viral posts, with employees and neighboring businesses experiencing harassment. Rubin noted that staff treated Clarkson like any other customer in the busy shop and expressed fear for the safety of workers, describing the online backlash as social warfare.

Context

Celebrity social media posts about customer service disputes can quickly direct immense public attention toward small local businesses, sometimes resulting in rapid online backlashes. Retail spaces in major urban centers often handle high volumes of everyday shoppers alongside tourists and public figures, making routine interactions prone to different interpretations.
