Volvo India launched its flagship electric SUV, the EX90, in October 2026 as an electric alternative to its flagship petrol-powered XC90 model. The EX90 carries an ex-showroom price of Rs 1.26 crore, making it Rs 27.20 lakh more expensive than the XC90, which is priced at Rs 98.80 lakh.

Exterior and Dimensions

The EX90 features a simpler front design with a closed-off grille and hidden main headlamps behind pixel-style LED DRLs. In contrast, the XC90 retains a traditional front fascia with a prominent grille and manual pull-type door handles, whereas the EV uses electrically operated flush-fitting handles. Dimensionally, the EX90 measures 5,037mm long, 1,964mm wide, and 1,744mm tall, making it 84mm longer, 33mm wider, and 27mm lower than the XC90. The EV rides on larger 21-inch wheels and features a slightly longer wheelbase of 2,985mm.

Interiors and Features

Both SUVs come equipped with air suspension, a 360-degree camera, an ADAS suite, four-zone climate control, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, though the EX90 has 25 speakers compared to the XC90's 19. The EX90 features a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen and a six-seater layout with middle-row captain seats, while the XC90 has an 11.2-inch touchscreen with physical controls, a panoramic sunroof, and a seven-seater layout. The EX90 offers a 324-litre boot along with a 46-litre frunk, while the XC90 provides a 302-litre boot with all seats up.

Powertrain and Performance

The India-spec EX90 runs on a 106kWh battery pack with a dual electric motor setup that delivers 456hp and 670Nm of torque, achieving zero to 100kph in 5.5 seconds with a WLTP range of 625km. Meanwhile, the XC90 uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, generating 250hp and 360Nm of torque with a 0-100kph time of 7.94 seconds.

Context

Automakers are increasingly offering electric equivalents alongside traditional internal combustion engine models to ease the transition for buyers toward zero-emission vehicles. Comparing these flagship models highlights how luxury brands are shifting from conventional fuel systems to battery-electric platforms while maintaining familiar comfort and technology levels.
