Paul Tudor Jones says 2027 could be a tough year for US stocks. He told CNBC's Squawk Box that the year will face the most negative flow picture since 2002. Jones pointed to a wave of big‑ticket technology IPOs, rising equity supply and a growing fiscal deficit as the main threats to the four‑year bull run. He noted that corporate buybacks and mergers have kept supply low so far, but that dynamic may reverse in the AI space. Anthropic and OpenAI are slated for major offerings and a recent share issuance for SpaceX adds to the pressure. Jones expects more secondary offerings as AI firms raise money for development, which would further boost share supply and could pull prices down. He compared the situation to 1999, the year before the dot‑com crash, and said the divide between AI winners and laggards is widening. "I'll be short the whole year. There’s little value," he said, recalling that 1998‑2002 were the easiest years for short sellers because of repeated share unlocks. The US fiscal deficit worries him too; he believes markets may force higher taxes or spending cuts, likening a possible reckoning to the 2008 crisis and TARP. Jones put the odds at 60‑40 that the country is moving toward that adjustment. He is long on oil and expects prices to rise $20‑25 after the midterm elections, a move that would add another headwind for equities.

Context

The warning ties together three broad pressures – more shares hitting the market, a widening fiscal gap and higher energy costs – each of which can independently drag stock prices lower when they happen together.
