A Saudi national working as an engineer at OpenAI has been federally charged with planting a covert recording device in the company's San Francisco office. Federal prosecutors say Abdulrahman Alfozan placed the encrypted device in an executive conference room to capture sensitive communications about the artificial intelligence firm's products. OpenAI employees discovered the hidden equipment on 30 September, two days after prosecutors state it was installed behind a television set in the conference room. The company stated that it used its own AI models to track down the source of the device and identify the employee responsible. OpenAI confirmed that the suspect has been fired, adding that there is no sign any source code, model weights, or customer data were stolen or accessed. According to the FBI, the accused used a chatbot and a productivity tool to research how to build, conceal, and remotely access audio recording equipment. Prosecutors stated that he returned to check the device on 5 October, where CCTV footage linked him to the scene, and left a bag containing his ID, wallet, and a second similar recording device elsewhere in the building. Alfozan appeared in court on Tuesday and faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
