What Happened
A 25-year-old man died and three others suffered critical injuries after a speeding Scorpio SUV hit at least 10 vehicles on a busy road in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening. The vehicle started its journey from the Kalinga Studio area toward Kalinga Vihar at 10 pm and first hit a two-wheeler near Nuagaon Chhak. It then crashed into nine more vehicles while trying to escape from locals who were chasing it, eventually stopping after hitting a road divider near the main entrance of SUM Hospital.
The Aftermath
Angry residents caught the driver, Daya Shankar Panigrahi, and allegedly beat him up before handing him over to the police. Locals stated that Panigrahi was driving while drunk. Three other people inside the SUV managed to run away from the scene before police arrived. Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Vivek M Saravana shared details about the vehicle's movement and the final crash.
Context
Reckless driving and road accidents involving speeding vehicles in major urban areas often lead to severe public outrage and safety concerns. Local communities frequently step in to stop fleeing drivers before law enforcement takes over the investigation.
