DGCA has prohibited the MOBIKINS MK-PB-04 portable charger from every flight that departs, lands or circles within Indian airspace, citing a recent fire incident on an IndiGo aircraft. The prohibition covers both checked luggage and cabin bags, as well as cargo holds. The ban follows a case where a passenger’s power bank ignited while stored in an overhead compartment, prompting safety concerns over lithium‑ion cells that can overheat if damaged or short‑circuited. Aviation watchdogs and industry observers are urging tighter checks on compliance with the Bureau of Indian Standards’ Compulsory Registration Scheme for batteries. A Bangalore‑based aviation group highlighted that the Mobikins model does not appear in the BIS registration database and advised shoppers to confirm the mandatory “R‑xxxx” registration number on the official CRS portal before purchase. The same group suggested that regulators should allow only brands listed under the CRS on aircraft, rather than targeting a single model, and called on online marketplaces to list only certified products. Nepal Airlines echoed the warning, stating that travelers on routes between Nepal and India must not bring the MOBIKINS MK-PB-04 in any baggage or cargo on Indian‑operated flights. The restriction is limited to this particular model and does not extend to all power banks.

Context

Lithium‑ion power packs are common travel accessories but can cause fires if their cells fail. India’s BIS registration aims to ensure that only batteries meeting safety standards reach consumers, reducing the risk of similar incidents.
