The Employees Provident Fund Organisation has rolled out simplified rules for partial withdrawals from provident fund accounts, taking effect from July 1, 2026. Eligible members can now withdraw up to 75 percent of their total PF balance, provided they keep a minimum balance of 25 percent in the account. The calculation includes contributions from both the employee and the employer along with accumulated interest. To qualify, members must complete at least 12 months of service.
New Categories
Under the updated framework, previous complicated provisions have been grouped into three main categories: essential needs, housing needs, and special circumstances. Essential needs cover medical treatment, children's education, and marriage. Housing needs include buying a plot or house, building a home, paying a home loan, and carrying out repairs. For medical treatment, members can withdraw up to three times in a financial year, with second-source reports noting no overall cap on medical advance counts. Education allows up to 10 withdrawals across the entire membership period, while marriage permits up to 5 withdrawals. Housing-related withdrawals are also capped at 5 times over the membership duration.
Special Circumstances
Special situations now feature easier rules where members do not always need to state a reason for taking money out. In case of job loss, a member can immediately withdraw up to 75 percent of their balance, while the remaining 25 percent can be accessed after 12 months of unemployment. Final settlement of the full amount is permitted upon retirement, permanent disability, layoffs, voluntary retirement, and moving abroad permanently. Members can check official guidelines and application procedures on the EPFO website at epfindia.gov.in.
Context
Provident fund accounts serve as a primary social security tool for salaried workers in India to build long-term retirement savings. Mandating a minimum 25 percent balance ensures that accounts continue to benefit from compound interest over time instead of being completely drained by frequent early withdrawals.
