Tata Elxsi shares jumped more than 12 percent over two days following its September-quarter earnings report for fiscal year 2027. Operating revenue grew 3.4 percent from the previous quarter to reach 1,056 crore rupees, marking a 2.3 percent rise in constant-currency terms. Operating profit margins moved back up to 19.7 percent after dropping sharply by 330 basis points in the first quarter, helped by better operational efficiencies that easily covered wage hikes.
Growth Drivers
All three main business areas saw growth during the quarter. Transportation, which brings in 55 percent of software development services revenue, grew 2 percent due to original equipment manufacturer business and aerospace deals, along with new work involving Sarla Aviation. Media and communications grew 3.4 percent with help from generative AI projects, while healthcare and life sciences grew 3.5 percent from new digital health and product engineering deals.
Risks And Future Outlook
Even with this positive quarter, total revenue remains 14.5 percent lower compared to the same period last year in constant-currency terms. The company also faces weaker demand from European auto makers and client concentration in healthcare, while AI automation threatens traditional engineering services. Management expects growth to speed up in the second half of the year as capacity utilization reached 78 percent and wage hikes are already complete.
Context
IT and engineering service providers often experience margin shifts when wage revisions and project delivery timelines change from quarter to quarter. Company valuations in this sector depend closely on how fast new tech areas like artificial intelligence can make up for slower traditional business lines.
