Screen Demands

The thriller Drishyam The Conclusion crossed the Rs. 300 crore mark on Sunday, October 11, and now aims to clear Rs. 375 crore with a small chance at the Rs. 400 crore club. Because the film remains strong on weekdays, its distributors, Panorama Studios, want theaters to reserve enough shows for its third week starting October 16.

Theater Dilemma

Distributors have asked single-screen cinemas for at least 3 shows, two-screen halls for 5 shows, and three-screen cinemas for 6 shows including 1 morning show. Four-screen multiplexes face a request for 7 shows, five-screen venues for 8 shows, six-screen halls for 10 shows, and cinemas with seven or more screens must provide 15 shows. This creates trouble for theater owners because many new films like Nayyi Navelli, Prahaar, Street Fighter, Jailer 2, and Ranabaali are releasing this week. Jailer 2 and Ranabaali will also release in Hindi.

Booking Delay

Cinemas are currently trying to negotiate with various film distributors to reach an agreement, which is why advance ticket bookings for next week remain closed at many theaters. A trade source notes the issue could resolve by Wednesday morning or evening, or stretch until Thursday just one day before the new movies arrive. Meanwhile, makers want theaters to sell tickets at regular prices to keep drawing crowds.

Context

Ticket pricing and show sharing are common points of intense discussion between film distributors and theater owners during busy holiday or multi-release windows. Theater operators must balance profits from proven blockbusters against the space needed to test new box office releases.
