Former India opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has threatened legal action against the organisers of the World T20 Continent Cup for listing him as a participant without his consent. Dhawan stated on social media that his name was used without his knowledge and he never agreed to join the tournament. He asked his fans and media outlets to ignore any unverified announcements regarding his involvement.
Cricket Career
Dhawan announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket on August 24, 2024. Across his career, he played 167 one-day internationals, scoring 6,793 runs with 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries at an average of 44.11. In T20 internationals, he scored 1,759 runs in 68 matches, while in Test matches he accumulated 2,315 runs in 34 matches.
Partnerships
He earned the player of the tournament award when India won the 2013 Champions Trophy and later captained the national side in 12 one-dayers and three T20 matches between 2021 and 2022. Alongside Rohit Sharma, he formed a successful opening pair that amassed 5,148 runs in 115 one-day internationals with 18 century partnerships. Their combination alongside Virat Kohli formed a dominant top three for the Indian team over a decade.
Context
Sports personalities often face issues where third-party event organisers use their names or images without permission to attract public attention or ticket sales. Athletes take legal steps in such cases to protect their personal brand and prevent fans from being misled by false promotional claims.
