Stake Sale Approved

The Union Cabinet approved the strategic restructuring of IDBI Bank with Canada-headquartered Fairfax Financial Holdings set to acquire a 60.72 percent stake for ₹52,878 crore. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs greenlit the transaction where the central government will sell a 30.48 percent stake and Life Insurance Corporation of India will sell 30.24 percent. This marks the largest foreign direct investment in India's financial sector.

Shift in Ownership

Following the share sale at ₹81 per share, the government's remaining stake in IDBI Bank will drop to 15 percent and LIC's share will fall to 19 percent, transferring control of the lender to Fairfax. IDBI Bank previously entered the Prompt Corrective Action framework in 2017 due to poor financial health before LIC took a controlling stake in January 2019 by infusing ₹21,624 crore.

Context

Ministry of Finance sources stated that the Reserve Bank of India will continue its full regulatory supervision over the lender. Customer deposits remain insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor, and the bank must maintain its mandatory priority sector lending targets along with existing social security schemes.
