Questions Raised

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah to reveal how many alleged infiltrators were found, removed from voter lists, and deported after the Special Intensive Revision. Mr. Ramesh posted these questions on X after Mr. Shah accused Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi of trying to get infiltrators registered as voters.

Disenfranchisement Claims

The Congress party accused the government of using the infiltration issue to hide large-scale removal of voters. Mr. Ramesh stated that the Prime Minister and Home Minister have taken away the voting rights of nearly 14 crore Indians. He asked if the Home Minister meant to suggest that these 14 crore people who lost their right to vote were actually infiltrators.

Voter Statistics

Mr. Ramesh noted that nearly 100 crore Indians went through the Special Intensive Revision process and have a right to know its results. He also questioned if infiltration had gone up a lot during Mr. Shah's time in office.

Political Clash

On Tuesday, the Home Minister criticized Opposition protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the revision exercise. Mr. Shah stated that Mr. Gandhi was shielding infiltrators by opposing the process. He also said the Congress party will face another crushing defeat in the 2029 Lok Sabha election because people support Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Context

Political disputes often arise over changes to voter lists and the status of electoral rolls in the country. Leaders from different parties frequently clash over voter registration rules and security concerns related to borders and citizenship.
