West Indies cricketers Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford have received official reprimands and one demerit point each for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Men's T20I against India in Ranchi on Friday.

The Offences

Powell breached Article 2.2 for abusing cricket equipment when he hit the ball away with his bat after being dismissed by Mayank Yadav in the sixth over of the innings. Rutherford breached Article 2.8 for showing dissent at an umpire's decision by yelling aggressively in the 13th over because a delivery he believed was wide was ruled legitimate. Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Prakash Bhatt, avoiding formal hearings.

Official Roles

On-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Rohan Pandit, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Virender Sharma levelled the charges against the pair. For both players, this marked their first disciplinary offence in a 24-month period.

Context

Level 1 breaches under the ICC Code of Conduct carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of half a match fee, alongside demerit points that remain on a player's record for two years. Accumulating four demerit points results in a suspension, turning into bans from international matches according to standard cricket regulations.
