Kenya has confirmed a second case of Ebola in a 39-year-old man who is a close relative of the businessman who died from the virus earlier this month. The new patient tested positive while already kept in isolation after officials traced people linked to the first case. The initial victim, a 40-year-old Kenyan man, fell ill while living in the Democratic Republic of Congo and visited two local medical facilities before taking a journey through Uganda to reach Nairobi. Airport checks failed to spot his infection before he flew, and he died on October 5 shortly after being admitted to a hospital by a relative who picked him up. ABC News - International reports that health authorities identified about 128 total contacts connected to that first patient, placing 108 of them into quarantine within Kenya while five contacts outside the country were also flagged to local authorities. Catching the new patient's illness early boosts his recovery odds and limits community transmission, according to the health ministry. Officials state that both infections tie directly together and there remains no proof of wider spread, keeping travel, trade, and public gatherings open without new restrictions.

Context

Ebola spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids like blood or vomit, and its incubation period stretches from two to 21 days. The ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which lacks an approved vaccine or standard treatment.
