YouTube Music is rolling out a new labeling system to clearly show listeners when songs are created using artificial intelligence. The labels will appear directly on the player page for tracks where AI was used in composition or vocals, and users can tap the tag to see more details about how the technology was involved.

Designation System

YouTube developed these tags by working with music partners and using its own detection tools. Partners can declare their use of generative AI using three options: 'Fully Gen AI' for songs made entirely by AI, 'Partly Gen AI' for tracks combining human and machine elements, and 'No Gen AI' for tracks edited with tools like Auto-Tune. These labels will also expand to the main YouTube app.

Industry Approaches

Other streaming platforms are adopting different rules to handle the flood of AI music. Apple Music plans to introduce its own transparency tags later this year, and Spotify already features voluntary labels along with spam filters. Meanwhile, platforms like Deezer and TIDAL label entirely AI-generated tracks and exclude them from royalties and algorithmic recommendations, with Deezer also working on a filter to block them completely. YouTube, by contrast, focuses on disclosure rather than blocking monetization and even experiments with its own AI creation tools like Dream Track.

Context

The rapid rise of generative AI in media has forced digital platforms to figure out how to manage copyright, artist consent, and listener trust. While some services choose to restrict or ban machine-made tracks entirely, others rely on labeling to keep content accessible while informing the public.
