Three young Malayalis died and five others were hospitalized after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Bochum, Germany, on Tuesday morning. The victims are Nova Sabu from Idukki, Anjali S. Joy from Kollam, and Sivin Johny from Ernakulam.

The Incident

The fire started around 4:15 AM local time on Tuesday in a multi-storey residential building located in the Hofstede area of Bochum. Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the blaze, but thick smoke and fast-moving flames spreading up the stairwell made it hard to reach the upper floors. Rescue workers eventually found the three victims dead inside an apartment on the second floor of the building. Five other people fell sick after breathing in heavy smoke and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, though their nationalities have not been confirmed yet.

Arrest Made

German police arrested a 41-year-old Romanian man who lived in the same building in connection with the tragedy. Investigators confirmed that the fire was not caused by an electrical or technical fault and are treating the incident as a suspected arson attack. Authorities are currently looking into whether the fire was set deliberately or caused by negligence.

Context

Fires in multi-storey residential buildings can quickly turn dangerous when thick smoke fills stairwells and blocks escape routes before emergency services arrive. Incidents involving intentional property damage or arson in apartment blocks are treated as serious criminal offences by law enforcement agencies in Europe, prompting swift arrests and detailed forensic investigations.
