Good vision does not mean your eyes are healthy, as many serious conditions develop without pain, redness, or early warning signs. By the time a person notices trouble seeing, permanent damage may already be done.

Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy

Ophthalmologist Dr Rishi Bhardwaj points out that conditions like glaucoma can damage the optic nerve slowly over time while central vision stays clear. A 2026 review of 13 Indian studies shows that glaucoma affects 3.23 percent of people aged 40 and older, and this figure could reach 4.52 percent by 2050. Another silent threat is diabetic retinopathy, where high blood sugar harms blood vessels in the retina while overall vision remains normal.

Prevention and Checkups

Experts advise that routine eye exams should look beyond basic vision tests to check eye pressure, the optic nerve, and the retina. People with diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or older age need frequent checkups and must keep their blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control.

Context

Routine medical screenings often catch silent health problems before symptoms appear, which is especially important for age-related conditions. Regular monitoring allows doctors to start treatment early and protect long-term health.
