India's six largest passenger vehicle manufacturers by volume are now offering factory-fitted CNG options across their portfolios as fuel demand rises. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai, Toyota, and Kia make up this group. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, these six companies sold 43,06,558 units in fiscal year 2026, marking a growth of 13.06 percent over the previous year. Their combined market share reached 91.53 percent in fiscal year 2026, and they retailed nearly 22,52,000 units during the April to September period of fiscal year 2027.
New Launches And Portfolios
Mahindra has launched the CNG version of the XUV 3XO compact SUV, named the XUV 3XO ZNG, with prices starting at Rs 9.99 lakh ex-showroom. According to CarWale, the model features twin CNG cylinders in the boot, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 110bhp and 200Nm, and a claimed mileage of 24.70 km/kg across four variants. Mahindra previously offered only petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains. Kia recently introduced CNG options in the Carens and Carens Clavis MPVs. Maruti Suzuki currently maintains the widest factory-fitted CNG portfolio among leading makers, spanning hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, and MPVs. Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Toyota also offer CNG variants across multiple models, while brands like Honda, Renault, and Nissan provide only dealer-installed retrofit kits.
Market Share And Costs
Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations shows that CNG's share in passenger vehicle sales stood at 21.98 percent in fiscal year 2026. The share climbed steadily through the year, reaching 22.62 percent in April 2026, 23.34 percent in May, 24.33 percent in June, 24.67 percent in July, and 25.28 percent in August, before moderating to 23.11 percent in September. Industry analysts note that demand is largely driven by running-cost savings, favorable ownership economics, and an established refuelling network. In Delhi, fuel prices stand at Rs 102.12 per litre for petrol, Rs 95.20 per litre for diesel, and Rs 86.98 per kg for CNG.
Context
Factory-fitted CNG systems are integrated directly during vehicle manufacturing and come with company warranties and safety approvals, unlike aftermarket kits installed by local dealers. The rising popularity of alternative fuel options highlights how buyers and fleet operators look to lower daily commuting and operational expenses amidst high traditional fuel prices.
