Supreme Court Gives Rajpal Yadav Two‑Week Deadline to Propose Payment, Orders Rs 2 Crore Deposit

The Supreme Court on September 15, 2026 set a final two‑week deadline for actor Rajpal Yadav to file a concrete plan for settling his outstanding cheque‑bounce dues and to deposit Rs 2 crore with the court registry. A three‑judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, also extended his exemption from surrendering until October 5.

Background

In 2010 the actor allegedly received financial assistance of Rs 5 crore for a film project from the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. Under a 2012 agreement, Yadav, his wife Radha Rajpal Yadav and their company promised to repay roughly Rs 11 crore, interest included. In 2013 Yadav issued seven cheques of Rs 1.05 crore each as part of a settlement; all cheques bounced.

Court Criticism

The bench noted Yadav’s repeated non‑compliance with earlier orders and said his conduct failed to inspire confidence. It described his behaviour as more theatrical than cooperative.

Defense Argument

Senior advocate P.S. Patwalia, appearing for Yadav, asked for the two‑week period to present a detailed payment roadmap and pledged the Rs 2 crore deposit as a sign of good faith. Patwalia added that Yadav had already served four‑and‑a‑half months in prison and would need help from industry friends to raise the money.

Complainant’s Position

Senior advocate Ajit Sinha, representing Murali Projects, stressed that the firm’s sole aim was to recover the defaulted amount and reiterated Yadav’s history of failing to honor financial commitments. The court will hear further arguments on October 5.
