Indraprastha Gas Limited has begun an artificial‑intelligence pilot to verify CNG cylinder hydro‑tests at ten of its retail stations. Cameras at each station record vehicle registration numbers as vehicles refuel. The captured numbers are fed to an AI application that checks the hydro‑test status of the vehicle’s CNG cylinder against records on the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) portal. The system aims to ensure that only cylinders with a valid three‑year test are dispensed. IGL announced in early September that it would refuse CNG to any vehicle lacking a current hydro‑test certificate. Mohit Bhatia, Director (Commercial) of IGL, said the company will assess the pilot’s results and consider expanding it, as well as linking certification data with broader vehicle databases in discussion with regulators. Government rules require each CNG cylinder to undergo hydro‑testing every three years at a PESO‑approved centre. By automating verification, IGL hopes to tighten compliance and reduce the risk of unsafe cylinders on the road. The pilot runs at ten stations while the company monitors accuracy and operational impact. ## Context The hydro‑testing rule is a safety measure to prevent cylinder failures, and linking it to vehicle registrations lets gas stations quickly confirm compliance without manual paperwork.
