A magnitude‑6.9 earthquake struck 76 km northeast of the town of Ozernovskiy in Russia on Friday, October 16, 2026, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake’s epicentre was recorded at a depth of about 143 km, with coordinates near 52.01° N latitude and 157.25° E longitude. Initial estimates placed the magnitude at 6.5, but seismologists later raised it to 6.9 after further analysis. In the Kamchatka region, instrumental intensity reached up to four points, and residents of Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky felt shaking equivalent to a magnitude‑5 event. The tremor occurred at 3:36 p.m. local time (03:36 a.m. GMT) and lasted roughly one minute. Several people in the administrative centre of the region evacuated their apartments as the shaking rattled light fixtures, slammed doors and made tableware clatter inside homes. The Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Service confirmed the intensity and noted that the epicentre lay on land about 156 km southwest of Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky, at a depth of around 138 km.
Context
Kamchatka sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone where tectonic plates constantly grind against each other, making strong earthquakes a regular risk for nearby communities.
