Recent research reveals that the ancient landmass Gondwana was larger than previously thought, adding about 16% of its area now identified in the Himalayas. This finding reshapes how scientists view Earth's supercontinents and their role in sparking early animal life during the Cambrian explosion. Experts say the extra landmass created new marine habitats when Gondwana broke apart, providing conditions that encouraged rapid evolution. Rocks in the Himalayas contain geological signatures matching the missing portion of Gondwana, confirming the link. The revised map shows Gondwana stretched from present‑day South America through Africa, India, Antarctica and into parts of Asia, making it the biggest supercontinent before Pangaea. Researchers note that the breakup around 540 million years ago released nutrients into oceans, fueling the Cambrian boom of diverse life forms. The findings come from collaborations among geologists and paleontologists analyzing rock samples and fossil records, offering a new view of how complex life began on Earth.
