Health authorities have identified a wave of new bird flu cases in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions of Australia. Additional cases of the virus have also been detected further north in Sydney's south and east.

Following the spread of the virus to new areas, pet owners across the affected regions have been issued direct warnings to stay alert.
