Petrol and ethanol cars are losing ground in India's passenger vehicle market even though total sales are going up. These vehicles made up 40.85 percent of retail sales in August, dropping from 46.37 percent in August 2025. Passenger vehicle retail sales went up by 16.14 percent compared to last year, reaching 4,02,398 units in August. Total sales crossed the four-lakh mark for the first time in this month, meaning petrol vehicles are losing space inside a growing market.
