Top Hatchback Clash: Comparing Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20 Trims

For over ten years, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai i20 have competed fiercely in the premium hatchback market segment. Hyundai recently updated the i20 with a revised lineup earlier this year, while Maruti Suzuki introduced a major facelift for the Baleno. Buyers looking at top-of-the-line models typically choose the Alpha(O) trim for the Baleno and the Asta(O) trim for the i20. In terms of physical dimensions, the i20 measures 3,995 mm in length, 1,775 mm in width, and has a wheelbase of 2,580 mm, making it longer, wider, and longer-wheelbased than the Baleno. The Baleno measures 3,990 mm long, 1,745 mm wide, and has a 2,520 mm wheelbase, but it stands taller at 1,530 mm compared to the i20's 1,505 mm height and offers a slightly larger boot capacity of 318 litres against the i20's 311 litres. Under the hood, both top trims rely on a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The Baleno uses a 3-cylinder unit producing 83 horsepower and 112 Nm of torque, paired with a standard 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. The i20 uses a 4-cylinder unit producing an identical 83 horsepower on the manual version and 115 Nm of torque, but its CVT automatic version delivers 88 horsepower. The manual i20 costs 9.24 lakh rupees, which is 36,000 rupees cheaper than the manual Baleno at 9.60 lakh rupees. However, the automatic i20 costs 10.43 lakh rupees, making it 44,000 rupees more expensive than the automatic Baleno priced at 9.99 lakh rupees.
