New developer levy set for 2029 rollout as councils face huge infrastructure costs

Minister Chris Bishop defended the incoming charges by stating they are neither new nor a tax. At the same time, the Commerce Commission will step in to regulate development charges specifically for Hamilton.

Financial Burden

Government officials noted that local ratepayers have paid an eleven billion dollar infrastructure bill so far, prompting the need for this shift. Both local councils and property developers have welcomed the revamped levy, with many stating it cannot come soon enough.
