More women are getting testosterone prescriptions from doctors, but getting health insurance companies to pay for them has become much harder. Patients and doctors report facing more denials and long delays when trying to fill these orders. Insurance companies often block these requests because testosterone is not officially approved by health regulators for use in women. Doctors commonly prescribe it off-label for low sexual desire, fatigue, and muscle loss, especially for women going through menopause. Because of this off-label use, health plans frequently refuse coverage or demand extra paperwork before approving the treatment. This leaves many patients stuck paying high out-of-pocket costs or waiting weeks for approval.
