A 16-year-old former student shot dead three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15. Police identified the gunman as Griffin J. John II, who was shot dead at the scene by a passing driver. Law enforcement officials stated that the boy's mother bought the shotgun he used around his birthday in August, and investigators are examining his devices for any fixation on violence or previous mass shootings while his mother assists police. Police Chief Mike Krantz detailed that the boy threw a shotgun over the school fence, climbed after it, and fired at least three times at a pickup truck passing by. The driver escaped and called 911. The gunman then shattered double door glass panes, entered the building, and went straight into a special needs classroom on the left. Superintendent Steven Cook noted the boy was a former special needs pupil at the school. He fired up to 15 rounds using birdshot, buckshot, and slugs, while officers found 44 additional rounds at the scene.

Heroic Intervention

A teacher inside the classroom fought the gunman by throwing her phone at him and tackling him, an action police credited with preventing further bloodshed, and she was not hurt. Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old father of two students at the school who drove into the car park after seeing the truck shooting, took his legally owned pistol from his vehicle and went inside. Hearing shots and seeing the teacher struggle, Giamanco went to the classroom and fired, hitting the boy several times.

Casualties And Victims

The children who died were aged 5, 8, and 11, with police and family naming the youngest as Rhoam Summer. The teacher who died was 25-year-old Meghan Lambert, while the families of the other two children requested anonymity. A 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized at Oregon Health & Science University and St. Charles Medical Center, respectively.

Context

School shootings in the United States often prompt intense public debate over gun control laws, the accessibility of firearms to minors, and campus safety protocols. Incidents involving young shooters frequently lead to increased scrutiny regarding family storage of weapons and early identification of mental health or behavioral warning signs.
