CNG passenger vehicles have outperformed diesels for the second consecutive year in India, accounting for 21.98 percent of the market compared to 18.08 percent for oil burners in FY2026. This market shift has prompted Mahindra to launch its first major CNG passenger model, the XUV 3XO ZNG, pronounced Zing. The ZNG delivers the exact same power and torque output as its pure-petrol counterpart at 111hp and 200Nm.
Interior And Boot
Inside the cabin, the ZNG features a dual-tone dashboard, a CNG switch to the right of the steering wheel, and a pair of 10.25-inch screens for infotainment and instrumentation. Boot space drops to 270 litres because of the dual-tank CNG setup under the floor with a 10kg capacity, while the space-saver spare moves under the body. The vehicle comes in four trims and includes safety equipment like six airbags, electronic stability control, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Performance And Pricing
Mahindra achieves its unusual matching power figures by using a 10-bar CNG injection system alongside an optimised turbocharger and ECU calibration. The model is available exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox, claiming a fuel efficiency of 24.7km/kg for a theoretical range of 247km. Prices for the XUV 3XO ZNG range from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 12.27 lakh, sitting roughly Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.2 lakh above equivalent petrol variants.
Context
Compact SUVs equipped with factory-fitted CNG kits have become increasingly popular in India as buyers look for lower running costs without sacrificing utility. Mahindra's entry puts it directly in competition with established CNG alternatives in the compact segment like the Tata Nexon iCNG.
