Private vehicle owners in India must renew their Registration Certificate every five years once the initial 15-year validity period ends. Applications can be submitted online through the Parivahan Sewa portal up to 60 days before the expiry date. Driving with an expired certificate is illegal and attracts fines while also creating problems during insurance claims or vehicle transfers.

Required Documents And Fees

Applicants must keep Form 25, the old registration certificate, a valid insurance policy, a Pollution Under Control certificate, road tax receipts, and proof of identity and address ready before applying. Under Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules of 1989, fees vary by vehicle type, ranging from Rs 50 for invalid carriages to Rs 5,000 for imported cars, with motorcycles costing Rs 300 and non-transport light motor vehicles costing Rs 600. Late renewals add monthly penalties of Rs 300 for motorcycles and Rs 500 for cars, alongside a Rs 200 smart card fee.

Online Application Process

Users can log on to the Parivahan portal, select their state and Regional Transport Office, and enter their vehicle registration number along with the last five digits of the chassis number. After choosing the registration renewal option, owners must verify vehicle details, upload scanned documents, pay the fee online, and book an appointment for a physical vehicle inspection if required by the office.

Context

Vehicle registration documents help transport authorities maintain accurate databases of roadworthy vehicles across the country. Keeping these records updated ensures compliance with safety and environmental emission standards while protecting vehicle owners from legal liabilities.
