UPDATE - follow-up to Renault Duster hybrid mileage compared with strong-hybrid rivals: Renault has introduced the new Duster strong hybrid E-Tech 160 in India, with introductory ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs 16.99 lakh to Rs 19.49 lakh across three trims named Evolution, Techno, and Emotion.

Performance And Efficiency

The midsize SUV delivers an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29kpl, which edges past segment rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder at 27.97kpl, as well as the Maruti Victoris strong hybrid at 28.65kpl. The powertrain pairs a 1.8-litre four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery pack, generating a combined output of 160hp and a 0-100kph time of 9.61 seconds. According to Renault, the electric setup includes a high-voltage starter-generator and a 50hp traction motor producing 208Nm of torque. The transmission uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox with two electric gears and four petrol gears, while the battery is over twice as large as the 0.60kWh units found in competing Japanese models.

Features And Warranty

Bookings for the SUV opened on October 9 for Rs 21,000 via the company website and dealerships. The hybrid variant comes equipped with an illuminated grille, frequency-dependent dampers, and two new interior themes featuring a Dune Brown look with lighter pillars. Buyers receive a 7-year warranty alongside an 8-year or 160,000-kilometre battery warranty, plus an optional Renault Protect 360 package covering three years of insurance, maintenance, and assured buyback for Rs 89,900.

Context

Strong-hybrid vehicles combine a traditional internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery pack, allowing the car to recapture braking energy and run on battery power alone at lower speeds without requiring an external electrical plug. This technology helps reduce fuel consumption especially in heavy urban traffic conditions where petrol engines typically burn the most fuel.
