Hundreds of Iranian fishermen have rushed to the Strait of Hormuz in small boats to collect brand-new iPhones and French perfume floating in the water. The luxury items spilled from the container ship GFS Pride, which sank on October 14 after carrying more than 2,500 containers.

Differing Accounts

Singapore, where the vessel was registered, stated that the ship sank after a fire broke out on board, while safely evacuating all 21 crew members without injury. However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy gave a different cause, claiming the ship left an approved route and hit a sea mine.

Shipping Threats

This incident marked the second ship to go down within 24 hours and the third overall since the war began in late February. On Friday, October 16, Iranian army spokesman Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia stated that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen only if United States forces left the region. Meanwhile, fighting continued across the Arabian Peninsula, including Houthi sieges in Yemen and missile interceptions by the Saudi-led coalition.

Context

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital oil and cargo transit routes, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Maritime disruptions in this narrow waterway directly impact global shipping costs and international energy supplies.
