Ten people died and nine others sustained injuries when a fire swept through a seaside resort in Bangladesh on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The blaze started at around 6:30 a.m. at TUPTUP Resto and Resort in the Inani area of Cox's Bazar district. The property is located near Patuartek Beach along Marine Drive, roughly 29 kilometres from Kolatoli.
Rescue and Medical Status
Fire Service spokesman Talha Bin Zasim confirmed the death toll at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Nine injured individuals were taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for treatment. Resident medical officer Sabuktagin Mahmud Sohel stated that five burn victims were admitted with burns covering about 5 percent of their bodies, while another person was treated for a fall and discharged. Approximately 30 people were inside the three-storey bamboo and wood structure when the fire began. While four to five people managed to escape, the status of the remaining occupants is still unverified.
Investigation and Recovery
Ukhiya Police Station chief Mohammad Atikur Rahman Majumder and Cox's Bazar Fire Service deputy assistant director Syed Muhammad Morshed Hossain reported that the building was completely gutted by the flames. Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner A Mannan stated that six bodies had been recovered initially, and authorities planned to collect DNA samples before handing them over to relatives. The exact trigger for the fire remains undetermined while officials investigate, with some locals suspecting the flames originated in the resort kitchen.
Context
Fires in remote or coastal tourism spots often spread rapidly when buildings rely heavily on combustible materials like bamboo and wood. Local emergency services continue to look into the incident while awaiting forensic and investigation reports to confirm the origin of the blaze.
