Fifteen hospital workers have now lost their jobs for improperly looking at medical files belonging to the victims of the Nottingham attacks. Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust announced the dismissals on Friday after previously confirming 11 sackings in May. The total count now stands at 15 staff members fired, alongside 15 final written warnings and two first written warnings. Two other cases resulted in no further action. Those dismissed include doctors, nurses and registered healthcare professionals. The trust has informed independent regulators including the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the General Medical Council, the Information Commissioner's Office, and Nottinghamshire Police. The files involved belong to victims of the June 13, 2023 attacks by Valdo Calocane, who killed students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar and grandfather Ian Coates. Investigations are also continuing into the unauthorized viewing of files belonging to surviving victims Wayne Birkett, Sharon Miller and Marcin Gawronski. Dr Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at NUH, apologized for the further pain caused to the grieving families. She stated there is no excuse for accessing patient records without a valid reason. The trust launched a campaign called Your Responsibility, Your Actions, Their Privacy to educate employees on data rules. A new technology system is also being tested to spot and warn the trust about potential data breaches in the future.
Context
Medical records are legally protected under strict privacy rules to ensure patient confidentiality. Healthcare workers are only permitted to view files when they are directly involved in a patient's care. Unauthorized access to sensitive medical data breaches data protection laws and can lead to disciplinary action, job loss and referral to professional regulators.
