UPDATE - follow-up to Musk has spent $276 million on midterms to help Republicans retain control of Congress: Elon Musk has spent roughly $366 million in the 2026 U.S. midterm election cycle, making him likely the single-biggest political donor in this year's races based on campaign finance records.

Spending Breakdown

Out of the total amount, $276 million has gone to Republican groups and his own super PAC since July to help Republicans keep control of Congress. This includes $158 million given to the Senate Leadership Fund, which is aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Another $20 million went to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which is aligned with House Speaker Mike Johnson. Musk also directed $76 million to his own America PAC, $10 million to the Lone Star Liberty PAC supporting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association, and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association. An America PAC spokesman confirmed these figures.

Other Expenses

Roughly $90 million spent this cycle paid for work done in the prior election or supported other issues. This included an unsuccessful candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court and a controversial program paying $1 million to registered voters who signed a petition supporting free speech and gun rights. The New York Times reported that Musk also donated more money through groups that do not disclose their donors. Public disclosures for third-quarter spending are set for Thursday, October 15, 2026.

Context

Political donations by wealthy individuals and super PACs play a major role in modern U.S. elections by funding advertising, ground operations, and voter outreach. Large contributions often draw intense public scrutiny regarding the political influence of billionaires on legislative outcomes and government contracts.
