Alabama puts inmate to death for 1998 double murder

Alabama carried out the execution of Jeffery Lee on Thursday for a 1998 double murder at a pawnshop. The state proceeded with the death penalty after the United States Supreme Court blocked a last-minute attempt to stop it. Lee was convicted of killing two people during the pawnshop robbery. His trial jury had originally recommended a sentence of life in prison without parole instead of the death penalty, but a judge used judicial override to impose the death sentence. The execution took place by lethal injection after an earlier plan to use nitrogen gas was blocked. Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union has asked Governor Kay Ivey to revisit other judicial override death sentences as her term comes to an end.
