Gold prices could reach new record highs over the next two years, driven by central bank buying, geopolitical tensions, rising government bonds, and economic shifts, according to a Financial Times report. Fund managers expect gold to grow as a safe investment amid currency drops and government bond concerns. Wednesday saw gold prices rise 2% to 4,075 dollars per troy ounce as investors weighed potential US Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. World Gold Council figures show central banks bought about 63 tonnes of gold in September, the highest monthly purchase since November 2024. In January, gold prices crossed 5,500 dollars per ounce before dropping, and experts predict Indian market prices could cross 2 lakh rupees per 10 grams by 2028. Meanwhile, international markets saw some recovery after heavy selling early in the week. On Friday, October 16, Comex gold futures rose 0.18% to 4,177.50 dollars per ounce, and silver futures rose 0.48% to 57.43 dollars per ounce. However, domestic gold and silver prices saw a decline. According to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association, 10 grams of 24-carat gold fell by 3,004 rupees to 1.46 lakh rupees, compared to 1.49 lakh rupees the previous week. Silver fell by 10,191 rupees to 2.11 lakh rupees per kilogram. Dainik Bhaskar reports that gold is up 13,319 rupees and silver is down 20,108 rupees so far this year.

Household Holdings

Total gold held by Indian households has crossed 5 trillion dollars, or 450 lakh crore rupees, surpassing India's gross domestic product of 4.1 trillion dollars or 370 lakh crore rupees. A Morgan Stanley report states that Indian homes hold about 34,600 tonnes of gold. This massive value comes as gold prices hit historic highs. International gold is trading above 4,500 dollars per ounce, which translates to roughly 1.30 lakh rupees per 10 grams.

Context

Gold has traditionally served as a safe haven asset during times of global economic uncertainty and currency fluctuations. Central banks buy gold to diversify their reserves and protect against domestic financial instability. The vast amount of gold held by Indian families reflects a deep-rooted cultural preference for precious metals as a secure long-term store of wealth.
