Team Selection
The New Zealand Kiwi Ferns start their Rugby League World Cup campaign against Fiji at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle. Coach Ricky Henry has picked seven debutants as the team looks to win a fourth World Cup title.
Star Additions
Stacey Waaka is among the new faces. She is a two-time Rugby World Cup winner, Olympic Gold Medallist, and Sevens world champion. Waaka moved to rugby league in 2024, playing two seasons with the Broncos before joining the Warriors women. Injuries stopped her from playing for the Kiwi Ferns earlier, but she is now fully fit for the tournament. Coach Henry said the tough selection process came down to deep talent in the squad. Other players making their first test caps include Kaiyah Atai, Chantay Kiria-Ratu, Trinity Tauaneai, Tenika Willison, and former Jillaroos players Shannon Mato and Zahara Temara. Georgia Hale and Raecene McGregor will continue to lead the side as co-captains.
Context
Rugby league tournaments bring together top international teams to compete for global titles. The Kiwi Ferns are aiming to bounce back after a tough loss in the previous World Cup final. Major international events give cross-code athletes a chance to test their skills on the world stage.
