Hero MotoCorp is stepping up its game in India's crowded 160cc motorcycle class with the newly updated Xtreme 160R 4V Carbon, going head-to-head against top sellers from TVS and Bajaj.
Performance And Specs
The 160cc street-naked battle features three main contenders with distinct engine setups. Bajaj takes the lead in raw power with its 164.9cc single-cylinder oil-cooled motor pushing out 18.5 horsepower at 9,500rpm, paired with a five-speed transmission. TVS counters with a 159.7cc engine making 17.6 horsepower at 8,650rpm, while Hero's 163.2cc unit delivers 17.1 horsepower at 8,750rpm after a minor 0.2hp boost. Despite being the heaviest at 151kg, Bajaj maintains a strong power-to-weight ratio of 122.52hp per tonne, aided by a larger 14-litre fuel tank that adds roughly 80km of extra real-world range compared to the 12-litre tanks on the Hero and TVS bikes. TVS offers the lowest seat height at 790mm and the highest ground clearance at 180mm.
Features And Pricing
Hero has closed the gap significantly in features, equipping its top Carbon variant with a 4.2-inch TFT display and making it the only motorcycle in this segment to offer cruise control. However, Bajaj still leads in total features by including an extra ride mode and display document storage, while TVS and Hero miss out on items like a slip-and-assist clutch, Google Maps mirroring, and low-speed crawl modes. In terms of braking, Bajaj stands out with a large 300mm front disc rotor, while all three models offer dual-channel ABS on top variants and right-side-up telescopic forks on lower versions. Hero is currently accepting bookings for the new Xtreme 160R 4V with prices ranging from Rs 1.27 to 1.41 lakh, making it the most expensive base option among the three, with nationwide deliveries slated to start in November.
Context
The 160cc motorcycle segment is one of the most fiercely contested categories in the Indian two-wheeler market, where commuter practicality meets sporty performance. Manufacturers frequently update these models with new tech features and cosmetic refreshes to attract young buyers looking for sporty daily riders without stepping up to larger engine displacements.
