The Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG enters the compact SUV segment priced from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 12.27 lakh, carrying a price increase of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.2 lakh over standard petrol models to compete with the Tata Nexon iCNG and Maruti Brezza CNG.

Strengths And Performance

Under the hood, a 1.2-litre MPFI turbo-petrol engine produces 111hp and 200Nm in both fuel modes. The vehicle delivers 24.7km/kg of claimed mileage for a 247km theoretical CNG range. To handle the extra 100kg of CNG hardware mostly over the rear axle, Mahindra has retuned the suspension for a firm yet controlled ride. The cabin mirrors standard trims with dual-tone dashboards, leatherette upholstery, and a roomy rear seat that fits three adults. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, stability control, ISOFIX anchors, and a reversing camera, with engineering aimed at matching a five-star Bharat NCAP rating.

Drawbacks And Limitations

The twin-cylinder setup reduces boot space down to 270 litres, allowing room for up to four cabin-sized bags. Cabin ergonomic flaws include front seats that lack ventilation, a steering wheel that lacks reach adjustment, a cramped driver footwell, and no dead pedal. Available across only four mid-spec trim levels, the vehicle misses out on features like a 360-degree camera, wireless charging, and fog lamps, while relying strictly on a 6-speed manual transmission.

Context

Compressed natural gas vehicles have gained popularity across India as buyers seek lower running costs compared to petrol and diesel alternatives. Manufacturers increasingly adopt twin-cylinder tank layouts placed beneath the boot floor to preserve usable cargo space in compact cars.
