Rise and Fall
Disgraced entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes is the subject of a new A24 documentary titled You Can See Everything, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. The three-hour film was shot during the 34 days before Holmes reported to federal prison camp Bryan in Texas to begin an 11-year sentence for wire fraud and conspiracy. Holmes founded Theranos at age 19 after dropping out of Stanford University in 2003, promising to run hundreds of medical tests on just a few drops of blood. By 2014, the company reached a $9bn valuation, and Holmes became America's youngest self-made female billionaire with a net worth of $4.5bn at age 30. However, the business collapsed after investigations revealed the blood-testing technology was an illusion built without peer-reviewed data.
The New Documentary
According to Variety, the secretive documentary premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and features reality-bending moments where Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, invite the crew into their home, with Fielder even living with the couple 24/7. In a surprising twist, Emmy winner Amanda Seyfried returns to play Holmes in dramatic re-enactments alongside Christopher Abbott as Evans, re-creating private conversations with Fielder. The documentary also captures Holmes reading bedtime stories to her two young children and arguing with Evans that journalists fabricated her husky-voiced persona. The biggest revelation occurs off-camera, as Holmes and Evans planned a new medical tech startup called Haemanthus, with Evans seeking $18.5m in 2025 for a device claiming to scan blood, urine, and saliva samples using lasers.
Context
High-profile corporate scandals often leave behind complex questions about accountability, regulatory oversight, and the intense allure of charismatic founders in the tech industry. Documentaries examining these figures frequently blend investigative journalism with intimate access to understand how widespread illusions are built and sustained.
