Diane Watson, a 16‑year‑old pupil at Whitehill Secondary School, was stabbed to death in the school playground in 1991. The attacker was 15‑year‑old Barbara Glover, who arrived with a large kitchen knife after a fight outside a shop left her humiliated. While Glover shouted and waved the knife, she lunged at Diane, who collapsed on the playground. Pauline Love Thomson, Diane’s best friend, ran to her, put an arm around her shoulder and helped carry her across the road to the flat where Diane lived with her parents, Jim and Margaret, and brother Alan. Diane slumped before reaching the flat; Jim rescued her, attempted mouth‑to‑mouth resuscitation and carried her upstairs, but she was declared dead at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Glover handed herself in to police and was later tried, where Pauline testified that Glover had been harassing Diane over a former boyfriend and that the knife was placed in her bag the morning of the attack. Thirty‑five years later, Pauline Love Thomson spoke for the first time in the BBC Scotland podcast “Crime Next Door: The Playground Murder,” recalling the horror of that April morning and its lasting impact on the community.

Context

School‑yard violence in the early 1990s prompted tighter security measures in UK schools, and the case remains a reference point for discussions about youth aggression and mental‑health support.
