Well-known South Indian film actor Chitra passed away at her home in Chennai due to a cardiac arrest on August 21, 2021. Born as Sruthi Chitra in Kochi on May 21, she shared a birth date with actor Mohanlal, who was also her co-star in her adult debut film 'Aattakalasam' in 1983. Chitra was the second of three daughters born to railway engineer Madhavan and Devi, and she grew up in Chennai after her family moved there during her childhood. She could not continue her studies beyond the tenth grade and started her career as a child artiste.
Acting Career
Her debut adult film 'Aattakalasam' became a massive success, and its song 'Naanamaavunno Meninovunno' turned into a huge audience hit. Following this breakthrough, she acted in numerous Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films over the decades. Some of her notable movies include 'Sandarbham', 'Panchagni', 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha', 'Kalikkalam', 'Cheran Pandian', 'Devaasuram', and 'Aaraam Thampuran'. She also played Chandrika, a beloved character who loves Achootty, in director Bharathan's 1991 hit film 'Amaram'. Despite her extensive filmography and success, she left the industry after marriage to lead a peaceful family life in Chennai, though her later comeback acting stint did not match her earlier success.
Personal Life
Chitra faced severe personal struggles due to her extremely strict father, who accompanied her to film sets and did not allow her to speak with female co-workers, though she later tried to view his behavior as protective concern from a widower. She was once engaged to a noted Tamil director but called off the relationship after realizing he was a narcissist. When her father fell ill with kidney failure, he hurriedly arranged her marriage out of worry for her future, leading her to marry businessman Vijayaraghavan in 1990. The couple had a daughter named Mahalakshmi.
Final Days
Four hours before her sudden death, Chitra called her close friend and actor Kutty Padmini to ask her to look after her daughter Mahalakshmi and shared details about her savings. Her husband Vijayaraghavan was deeply shattered by her passing and died just thirty days later. Their daughter Mahalakshmi is now under the care of actors Kutty Padmini and Saranya Ponvannan. Chitra departed the world with two major unfulfilled desires: winning a State Award for Best Actress and working in a film with director Fazil.
Context
South Indian cinema has a long history of child artists transitioning successfully into prominent adult lead roles across multiple regional film industries. Sudden cardiac events can occur unexpectedly even when individuals celebrate milestones like birthdays or personal gatherings shortly beforehand. Family support networks often step in to care for children when both parents pass away unexpectedly in close succession.
