Brighton defender Pascal Struijk will not serve a one-match suspension after an independent commission successfully overturned his controversial red card from the match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Struijk was originally sent off by referee Thomas Bramall in the fifty-seventh minute after a challenge on Sunderland forward Wilson Isidor as he pursued a through-ball. Neither the on-field referee nor his assistant blew the whistle for a foul initially, but video assistant referee Neil Davies advised the official to review the pitchside monitor. Following multiple replays, Bramall gave a straight red card for denying a clear scoring chance, a decision that shocked the Brighton players on the pitch. Despite playing shorthanded following the dismissal, Brighton secured a two-nil victory to maintain their strong form in the Premier League. The Seagulls currently sit in third place in the league table, trailing leaders Manchester City by five points. Struijk, who moved to Brighton from Leeds for twenty million pounds during the summer transfer window, was making only his second league start for his new team.
Context
Video review systems in English football are meant only to correct clear and obvious errors rather than re-referee subjective incidents. Successful appeals against red cards clear players to play immediately without serving bans in upcoming fixtures, such as Brighton's upcoming match against Crystal Palace.
